 Specialist School - Outline

The Bishop's Stortford High School is a Specialist School in Mathematics and Computing.

The Specialist Schools Programme helps schools, in partnership with private sector sponsors and supported by additional Government funding, to establish distinctive identities through their chosen specialisms and achieve their targets to raise standards. We have a special focus in Mathematics and Computing but still meet the National Curriculum requirements and deliver a broad and balanced education to all pupils.

The programme promotes school improvement by providing opportunities for our school to work to our strengths, enabling us to deliver effective teaching and learning in our area of expertise, as well as across the curriculum, and drive innovation.

As a Specialist school we work with named partner schools for the benefit of pupils beyond our own school boundary and with other groups of people in the wider community. This ensures that the programme has an impact by helping to create a diverse network of secondary provision through the sharing of good practice and expertise.

We aim to:

  • raise standards of achievement for all pupils both in the specialist subjects and across the whole curriculum
  • strengthen and develop the quality of teaching and learning strategies in Mathematics and Computing and use this to help raise standards throughout the school
  • extend enrichment opportunities for extended learning through the specialist subjects, including links with private sector sponsors, business, further and higher education institutions and organisations related to our specialism - in order to raise achievement by encouraging a broader understanding of the relationship between specialist subjects and responding to pupils' needs and interests
  • encourage increased take-up and interest in the Mathematics and Computing
  • collaborate with designated Primary and Secondary partner schools to provide or facilitate high quality learning opportunities in our specialist subjects and higher standards by sharing specialist facilities and resources to further enhance the quality of teaching and develop and disseminate good practice
  • provide or facilitate high quality learning opportunities through specialist subjects for members of, and groups within, the school's wider local community, including local business. This will be achieved in partnership with Next Step, Hertford Regional College and the local Learning Forum.

We welcome the opportunity for our school to join and flourish in the world class network of innovative, high performing specialist secondary schools that work in partnership with business and the wider community. We are committed to a programme of continuous improvement and leadership.
