TBSHS achieves the Full International School Award

The School has achieved the Full International School Award in addition to becoming a UNESCO Associated School. The International Award has been granted for the International ethos embedded throughout the school and the extensive range of international experiences that impact on a majority of pupils within the school. The school has led the way with collaborative curriculum-based work with a number of International partner schools. In addition to our excellent partnerships with schools in France, Germany and Spain we are developing significant International initiatives with The Netherlands, Ghana and Rwanda. This involves fund raising, exchanges and sharing ideas and thoughts. The UNESCO Associated Schools network supports the integration of international perspectives in schools and promotes the values of UNESCO, including human rights, mutual respect and cultural diversity. Our ambition is to hold an International students voice conference for all of our partner schools with a global citizenship theme linked to the Olympic and Paralympics values.

International Co-ordinator, Mr PC Noble, comments 'We are passionate about increasing the opportunities for students to learn about life in a diverse global society. A global dimension approach to the curriculum can add relevance and real life to topics and really engage students. We are delighted to achieve the prestigious Full International School Award in recognition of our work. Membership of the UNESCO International Network of schools will provide us with regular newsletters with updates on resources and activities, have access to teaching materials on the UN system and be invited to participate in seminars and conferences in the UK'.

GCSE Records For High School Students

Year 11 students at The Bishop's Stortford High School have followed up last week's record-breaking A Level results at the London Road school with excellent results of their own.

Over 30% of all GCSE passes were at Grades A* or A, with another 29% at Grade B. 86% of the 150 Year 11 students who sat GCSE exams this summer gained Grades A* to C in at least 5 subjects. In Mathematics and English Language 92% and 91% respectively of the year group gained Grade C and above. Only one student (who only took 4 subjects) failed to achieve at least 5 Grades A* to G.

Almost 40% of the 150 boys achieved Grade A or better in at least 3 subjects and over 100 of them achieved 8 or more passes at Grades A* to C. In addition 37 Year 10 students passed a total of 47 GCSEs in Maths and/or English Literature, over three-quarters of them at Grades A* or A.

Outstanding GCSE performances included:

Joe Kitchen, who gained 8 A*s and 2 As

Alex Medhurst, with 6 A*s and 4 As

Will Moss, who achieved 6 A*s, 2 As and 1 B

Ben Biggs, who achieved 6 A*s and 2 As

Andrew Bostock, with 6A*s, 1 A and 1B

Frances Edouard-Whittaker, with 5 A*s and 4 As,

Sam Colclough, who achieved 4A*s and 5 As

Ben Thorogood, with 4A*s, and 5As

Twelve students in the year group, including 7 of those named above, also managed to combine their GCSE studies with an AS Level course in Maths. All of them passed, mostly at Grade B or better.

Headmaster Andrew Goulding said, “This is a very good set of results and I am especially pleased to see that our proportion of As and A*s is even higher than last year and the results in the core subjects of Maths and English are superb. The students and their teachers have worked extremely hard to achieve their successes. Congratulations to them and many thanks to their parents and the Upper School team, especially Mr. Chahil, for their extremely valuable support. Sadly for us today is the last exam results day for our dedicated and inspirational Head of Upper School, Mark Barrow. He is taking up a Deputy Headship in Chelmsford next term and all our students, parents and teachers wish him well in his new post”.

Balraj Chahil, Deputy Head of Upper School, added, “I have really enjoyed working with this year group - today's results represent a fitting reward for the efforts of the students, their parents and, of course, their tutors and subject teachers. I look forward to their continued success in the Sixth Form, where we shall expect them to maintain their high standards of endeavour and match last week's outstanding A Level results.”

Quality And Quantity In High School Students' A-Level Results

Students at The Bishop's Stortford High School have combined quality with quantity in this year's A Level results. A record 168 students from the town's largest Sixth Form sat A Levels and achieved outstanding results, with an overall pass rate of 100%. Once again over 60% of all passes were at Grade B or above and the 86% figure for passes at Grades A* to C surpasses the school's previous best. Over 26% of students achieved 2 or more passes at Grades A and A* .

Laurence Cook's 4 A*s, in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry, have earned him a place to read Engineering at Emmanuel College, Cambridge to read Engineering.

Fraser Elliott achieved 3 A*s in Maths, Further Maths and Physics, together with an A in Politics and a Distinction at Advanced Extension Award Level in Maths. He will be studying Maths at Downing College Cambridge.

Joe Sumner, who gained A*s in Economics, Geography and his Extended Project, as well as an A in Politics, will be following a course in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Merton College, Oxford.

Other noteworthy performances included:

Ed Moss, who gained 2A* grades, 1 A and a B, as well as a Merit at AEA Level in Maths. He will be reading Maths at Durham University.

Matthew Tedder, with 4 A*s and 1 A, who will be studying Physics at Warwick University,

Louis Reynolds, who achieved 3 A*s to gain a place at Sheffield University to read Politics

Abdul Kahar, who scored 3 A*s and an A, will be applying to read Medicine in 2011. He is following in the footsteps of Sherif Elwakil and Beshoy Reyad, who commence medical degrees this autumn at Cardiff University and Queen Mary College, London respectively.

Patrick Robbie, who has gained a place at the Royal Veterinary College in London

The following students also gained 3 or more passes at Grades A and A* - Liam Brown, Simon Dewhurst, Tim Dixon, Alan Fookes, Grace Harman, Ben Hart, Paul Horgan, Tom Johnson, Jo Menzies, James Morris, Aaron Pinnock and Liam Tedds.

Also worthy of special mention is Liam Meredith, who achieved Distinctions in all 12 units of his Sports Studies course (equivalent to 2 A Levels), to earn a place on the Media, Sports & Coaching Studies course at Oxford Brookes University.

The school's A* grades were spread across 9 different subjects, with exceptional results coming in Further Mathematics, where the 7 students involved gained 6 A*s and 1 A, and the demanding new Extended Project (3 A*s out of 12).

Mark Barrow, Head of Upper School, said, “We are delighted with these results, as they reflect the hard work put in by both students and teachers and the invaluable support given by parents. Members of this year group have helped each other through some difficult times and have achieved not only these results but so much more besides. They have raised huge amounts of money for charity, performed wonders musically and on the stage, and formed the backbone of the Rugby XV that was the only state school team to reach the quarter-finals of the Daily Mail Cup”.

Headmaster Andrew Goulding added, “Congratulations to all our students, especially our 3 successful Oxbridge entrants, Laurence, Fraser and Joe, and thank you to all their teachers and parents. To have a 100% pass rate at A Level, with nearly 60 students achieving at least 3 passes at Grade B or better is a fantastic achievement that owes a great deal to the tireless hard work and inspiration of Mark Barrow, our Head of Upper School. Sadly for us he is taking up a Deputy Headship in Chelmsford next term, but these results constitute a fitting tribute to his time here. All our students, parents and teachers wish him well in his new post”.

TBSHS students fantastic achievement in the UKMT Maths Olympiad

Every year TBSHS enters around 90 students into the Intermediate Maths Challenge. Most people have heard of the Maths Challenge, it is the largest national Mathematical competition with over 4000 schools entering it annually. We normally get a good haul of gold award winners but this year was extra special because two students, Tom Kitchen (year 10) and Oliver Philcox (year 09) (pictured below), managed to qualify for the tougher follow on round called the Olympiad.

Unlike the Maths Challenge which is multiple choice the Olympiad consists of 6 very challenging questions to completed in 2 hours. Pupils are encouraged to answer using full written and logical explanations at every step; much as they would have to do if studying the subject at degree level. An example question from this years paper is shown below, why not have a go!

The sum of three positive integers is 11 and the sum of the cubes of these numbers is 251.

Find all such triples of numbers.

Out of the (roughly) 200,000 entrants only 500 qualify for the Olympiad. Both Oliver and Tom managed to gain a distinction award placing them in the top 25% of students sitting the paper. This is a fantastic achievement and a first for the school.

This means Tom and Oliver placed in the top 0.06% of those who took the Maths Challenge (which is more like 0.01% nationally as most schools only enter their top sets to do it.) To have two such talented Mathematicians come through the school in close proximity is a rare event and without a doubt they will be going on to great things in the future.
