The House system at The Bishop's Stortford High School is an important way in which students can immerse themselves in the life of the school outside of lessons, and also take on important roles of responsibility.
Students at the School belong to one of six houses: Chantry, Dane, Meads, Rhodes, Twyford and Waytemore, names reflecting the rich history of the town. Every House has members from Year 07 to the Sixth Form but the main work of organizing and motivating the students is done by the House Officers - drawn from Year 11 - under the leadership of a member of staff appointed as Head of House.
House competitions run throughout the year and reflect the wide range of extracurricular activities offered by the School. Competitions in rugby, football and cricket are staged as whole day events taking place at the School's facilities at Jobbers Wood. Other sporting contests are run during games lessons and at lunchtimes. The annual drama competition challenges students to write, direct, produce and act in their own productions. Professional adjudicators have consistently praised the high standard of the productions and performances. Competitors in the School's Music Festival earn points for their Houses through performances at all levels. The year's House events are rounded off by Sports Day. House points earned from each of the year's competitions are added together to reveal the House Champions.
Most Houses offer weekly lunchtime activities where students of all ages interact socially, strengthening the spirit of community within the House and within the School as a whole. House Assemblies provide excellent opportunities to celebrate the successes of individuals and teams.
The House System at The Bishop's Stortford High School is a vibrant and vital part of a truly all round education.
